International Students

International Students at St Paul’s

St Paul’s hosts a strong cohort of students from across the world, who enrich and share the learning experiences that are opened up through an exchanged cultural perspective.

We are firm in the belief that international-mindedness and cross-cultural understanding are central to a comprehensive education. Our connection with sister schools in China strengthens this sense of intercultural cognisance.

Our Homestay programme places international students in local family homes within the school community. In this way, the experience of school in Australia is available with a more complete sense of a home, away from home. The security maintained by our Homestay Coordinator provides round-the-clock assurance that our international students are in a safe place, from which to grow and fully enjoy the experience of school in Australia.

Application Process

Enrolment applications for international students are managed by the Office of International Student Programme. For more information, contact us via international@stpauls.nsw.edu.au.

Enrolment Requirements

At St Paul's, enrolment requirements are in place to ensure that prospective international students have appropriate educational qualifications and/or experience, and a level of English language proficiency that will allow them to be successful in the course they apply to enrol in.

International students should also be age-appropriate for the year to which they are applying. Details of requirements for applying to St Paul's are contained in the Enrolment Requirements (International Students) document.

Sometimes students are required to attend an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) provider before entering St Paul’s Grammar School.

Academic Year and Age of Entry

The school academic year begins late January and concludes early December each calendar year. The school academic year is divided into two semesters. Each semester has two terms.

St Paul’s Grammar School prefers students to begin at the start of a semester, but enrolments at other times may be considered. Students enrolling in Senior Secondary School must commence in January for Year 11, with no late enrolments accepted.

All international students must attend school for the full academic term unless their initial commencement date is after the start of a term. Students are not permitted to arrive late at the start of each term or leave early before the end of a term. Failure to attend when school is in session could lead to the international student being in default of their student visa requirements and therefore jeopardise their place at St Paul’s Grammar School.

St Paul’s Grammar School accepts overseas students for enrolment at any age or course. However, overseas students wishing to enter the Homestay Programme should be aged 14 years or older.

Agent Agreements

It is not mandatory that enrolments for international students are facilitated by an education agent.

St Paul’s engages suitable education agents to act on their behalf to recruit international students. Written agreements between the school and education agents are non-exclusive.

St Paul's has a specific policy and procedure for engaging and monitoring education agents. If the school becomes aware, or has any reason to believe, that the education agent or an employee or subcontractor of the education agent has not complied with responsibilities under its written agreement with the school (including negligence, carelessness, incompetence, or false and misleading activities), the agreement may be terminated under the terms set out in the agreement.

Accommodation and Welfare Arrangements

St Paul’s Grammar School accepts:

  • International students who will be living with a parent or a Department of Home Affairs (DHA) approved relative, or;

  • International students for whom St Paul’s Grammar School holds a Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) and will live in school-approved homestay accommodation

International students attending St Paul’s have the option to stay with a local family while they are enrolled as a student. The programme has been in operation for many years and is very popular.

What is 'homestay'?

‘Homestay’ is a term used to describe the provision of accommodation by a family, a couple or a single person. A fee for this service is provided and generally covers

  • A single room for the student with a bed, desk, lamp, chair, somewhere to hang/store your clothes and appropriate lighting and ventilation.

  • The homestay provides your linen (pillow, sheets, towels), which are changed weekly.

  • The homestay provides you with three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and snacks, with lunch packed for you to take on school days.

  • Utilities (electricity, water, gas) are included, with adequate heating in winter and cooling in summer.

  • Cleaning of your room and common areas of the home.

The Homestay Programme is an important factor in helping you to improve your English skills and learn about Australian culture and way of life. Homestay families are chosen carefully and are provided with guidelines for a successful homestay experience. St Paul's maintains careful oversight of the homestay families and aims to provide the students with the greatest possible level of care whilst they are studying in Australia. Our homestay families seek to look after the students as if they were their own children and we rely on the homestay families to assist the school with its duty of care by maintaining regular contact between the homestay families and the school.

A member of staff from St Paul’s is appointed as the homestay coordinator to oversee all accommodation and welfare matters and is available 24 hours a day when students are in residence.

International Student Health Cover

All international students require Overseas Student Health Cover as part of the visa application. Families can organise their own cover, or St Paul’s Grammar School can do it on your behalf at the time of the Enrolment Offer.

ESOS Information

As a registered provider, St Paul’s Grammar School adheres to the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000, which protects overseas students by ensuring they meet visa conditions and receive high standards of education and support services.
